2008 Fishing Reports

5/10/08: I had a double header today.  Rob and his friends from Philadelphia were hoping to get into some striper action.  Unfortunately, no stripers around willing to bite.  We do have stripers to our south and I anticipate getting into them any day now.  We did enjoy some bluefish and the guys had a fun time with unlimited dog shark fishing.  The afternoon trip had Steve Cortese and his son and two friends from Germany.  They just wanted to catch a lot of fish.  So after playing with the blues, we headed back into the ocean for an unbelievable bite of dog sharks.  We must of caught over 100 sharks.  We even broke out the light tackle rods to make it a little more challenging.  They were glad with the absolute non-stop action.  Again, unfortunately no stripers.  Any day now we are due!   Capt. John

5/3 -5/4: Both days great fishing if you like catching bluefish.  Iwas out with my three boys, Andrew, Jake, and Brandon.  It as consistant action trolling for bluefish.  Saturday had the challenge of fishing in pea soup fog, but the fish didnt seem to mind.  Sunday was a beautiful day and the fish came on a bit stronger.  This Saturday we will be fishing a double header with two back to back charters for bluefish.  Stay tuned!

Fishing Report 4/25-4/26:
A mess of mostly 6- to 7-pound blues were fought to the boat with Seafood Fishing Charters on Barnegat Bay on the troll on Saturday. We tested the waters for striped bass while clamming off Sedge Islands that day, but nothing was doing with stripers yet. We also started looking around for stripers to clam at the same place the previous evening with no takers.  So bluefish are certainly an option in the bay.  Striped bass fishing should come around in the bay and ocean any day now as there are fish to our north and south right now.
Dates are going fast for spring stripers.

Full Day Stripers and Wreck fishing is only $650.  Spring open boat trips are just $85/person for 6 hours or $500 the boat.

Beach Haven Marlin Tournament: A couple of spots are open for a two-day, open-boat trip that will compete in the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club Tournament. Boats in the tournament are allowed to fish two days from July 30 to August 2. Last year the purse was $365,000, and 20 percent of any winnings go to the crew on the trip, but the rest goes to the anglers.
We are tournament ready and super fast!  My 33-foot HydraSports features three 250 h.p. engines, cruises at 45 m.p.h., tops out at 61 m.p.h. and arrives at the canyons in 2 hours in fair seas. Anglers can spend more time fishing than traveling. Call or email me if interested in joining our team in trying to win this tournament.

2007 Fishing Reports:

12/15/07: We were out today with Lee Schimmel, JD Langlois, and Pete Andersen.  We headed straight out of he inlet on our way to a favorite wreck for blackfish, when I had to stop the boat.  My fishfinder showed tons of fish and bait in 50' of water.  We stopped and had bass almost imediately, but all were shorts.  We had to call it an early day due to the heavy seas, but we ended up with 12 bass in 41 degree water.  I should get a few more trips in before my boat comes out so call to book your trip now.  Capt. John

12/8/07: I did another open boat striper trip today with Scott Armstrong, Edward Maciejeuski, Bill Vandergrift, Haig Panossian, and Peter Andersen.  All of which were from PA.  We headed back to where we were last week and found some birds and some fish marks around Harvey Cedars, but not like it was the week before.  So we worked our way back up north to Island Beach State park area.  We jigged up a keeper immediately and then a short, but then the action died.  We also jigged a winter flounder, so that makes three flounder in three weeks.  At leats this one was not lost like the summer ones from the past two weeks.  We eventually went trolling and got another keeper.  All in all a tough day.  We ended up with 2 keepers out of 3 bass total.  Biggest bass was 30".  This Sat we will be doing a combination Tog and Striper trip.  It will be an open boat trip and I still have a few spots left.  Call if interested.  Capt. John

12/1/07: Today we had an open boat trip with great results.  Out with us today were, Roberto Weinman, Chria and Eric Jud, Anton Dodel, and father and son team of Mike & Chris Bodner.  We had a pick of bass and blues all morning in some very stiff winds.  By the afternoon we were in 55' of water off of Harvey Cedars in 46 degree water.  The action just exploded as bass and blues were coming over the rails at a steady pace.  There were fish and birds all over!  Check out the picture of my fish finder, just loaded with fish and bait.  We even landed another fluke of 19" just like we did last week jigging, which was realeased due to the season being closed.  We stayed a little longer than planned and still the fish were all over.  No one was near us by the end of the day as we had these fish all to ourselves!  We caught 22 Bass and about double that in blues. We finished the day with the biggest bass at 34"   We will be fishing until there isnt any more fish to catch.  Book your trip now to get into this action.  Capt. John

11/24/07: We had a good report from yesterday, so we headed to the same spot.  We left promptly at 7 AM with Mike Hetrick and is fishing and hunting buddies from Reading, PA.  We arrived on the Harvey Cedars Lump to tons of birds and fish.  We caught bass and blues consistantly.  We even landed a 20" fluke that we had to release due to the closed season.  When the action slowed a bit, we heard of fish being caught 12 miles to he north off of Island Beach State Park in 60' of water.  Again more bass and blues all over.  The strangest thin of the day was a robin landed on our boat in the morning and hung out with us all day, even when we ran from Harvey Cedars to Island Beach State Park.  He seemed very comfortble just being on board and then he flew away later in the day.  We ended the day with 25 stripers of which 3 were keepers, 10 jumbo blues, and one fluke.  The blues and fluke were released.

11/17/07: I was out with two neighbors, Tommy Cormann and John Tomko and nine year old Jake Post.  We got a call about non stop fishing to our north, so thats where we headed.  When we arrived, we were into bass and blues.  They spanned about a 5 mile range with fish busting the surface and birds working on top.  We jigged them consistantly all morning.  The bass were 20" - 25" and blues were about 4 lbs.  We left that action to look for bigger fish in deeper water (60') to troll up more bass in the same size class.  The only difference was that the blues were all jumbos with the biggest being 16 lbs.  What a day!  There is still plenty of fish to our north, so book your trip now for some of the best fishing around.  Capt John

11/11/07: Today we were out with Ron Smith from Camden, NJ.   We  caught 10 bass and about 20 blues.  The biggest bass was about 15Lbs.  Today the bass were responding to trolled bunker spoons and umbrealla rigs.  No real huge fish, but all were keeper size or just under.

10/30/07: A repeat of yesterday.  We caught bass and blues all day long.  14 Bass up to 25 LBS for the Robinson crew of Toms River, NJ.  The fish are very hungry feeding on bunker schools.  Come book your trip now!  Also, I am getting good reports about wreck fishing as well.

10/29/07: What a great time out today with Bill Glasser of Howell, NJ.  Solid bass fishing today.  Fish were all keeper size from 28" up to 25 LBS.  We caught them on jigs to start and then trolled up some more on wire.  We caught 11 bass total.

10/16/07: Today we tried for bass with John Gallagher of Philidelphia, PA  We went up under several sets of working birds only to find big hungry bluefish under them.  Finally our first bass came later in the day, but it was released as it was only 24".  All passengers had a lot of fun with the consistant bluefish action.  Once the water cools a bit we should have the bass down our way.  I am hearing of good bass reports to the north right now.  Capt. John

10/13/07: We were out today with Kevin Bisser and friends from Mt Holly, NJ.  The target was sea bass and we did real good.  We got about 50% keeper ratio with consistant action.  We moved to two different wrecks with similiar action.  All 6 passengers limited out with sea bass to 5.5 lbs and we also caught some nice porgies and one nice blackfish.

10/6/07: I was out today with my 3 favorite mates.  My two sons, Andrew and Brandon and Jacob Post.  We went out for am day of fun fishing.  We saw some birds working about 1 mile out of the inlet.  We caught a few big sea herring and weakfish under the birds.  We then left that pile of boats and went further north looking for some bluefish.  We found them!  We had a blast with all of the 2 lb. bluefish my boys could handle and even a bonus bonito.  All in all a great day.  When we got back, the boys went right back to fishing off the dock!  I guess they are hooked!  Capt. John

10/1/07-10/2/07: After missing a few trips due to weather, we were due for an awesome trip.  We fished the Lindenkohl Canyon with Dave Ackland and his crew from work.  We trolled up a nice longfin as soon as we got the lines in the water.  We found some really nice water just below the tip.  We set up on the chunk and had fish on almost all night long.  Nice size yellowfin surrounded the boat right by our hydroglow light.  The biggest fish was about a 100lb. yellowfin.  By 6 am we were loaded with a limit of yellowfin and the one longfin so we headed for the Barn.  The fast two hour ride was nice and to be back by 8 AM with a boat load was a great feeling.  We are now starting to book Striper trips.  Book early to ensure the best dates.   Capt. John

9/29/07: We were out bottom fishing with Brad Cutworth and his family.  We had a good pick of nice size sea bass.  We fished a few different wrecks and put together a nice catch of tasty fillets.  The biggest bass was 4.5 lbs.

9/8/07 - 9/9/07: We had Jamie Borenious and his GE group out today.  Jamie missed his first trip with us to to a family emergency, but made it out this weekend.  We went to the deep of the Hudson Canyon at a nice temperature break that I found on my Raymarine E-120.  We had a few missed opportunities and  some mahi were caught.  At daybreak we trolled 3 long fins and added more mahi.  Everyone was happy to go home with some tasty tuna and mahi.  Capt. John

/2/07 - 9/3/07: We had an open boat overnight canyon trip Sunday into Monday.  Near perfect sea conditions.  What a great bunch of guys.  A few guys didnt have the offshore experience with such big fish.  We had Brian Cicoria of Monroe, NY, Andrew Brensinger and Chad Brensinger of Zionsville, PA, Dave Morin of Brick, NJ and Wayne Cowart all the way from S. Easton, MA.  After careful review of our Satellite water temp data from our Sirius Satellite Marine Weather data, which is fed into our dual Raymarine E120's, We decided to run to the Lindenkohl canyon.  We trolled right into our temp break and found only a stray skipjack right before setting up for our night chunking.  Although I marked fish 50 feet below the boat all night, they were very finicky in the bite.  At times we even had them right by our Hydroglow light helping themselves to our chunks, but carefully avoiding our hook baits.  After switching to hook tied directly to the line we were able to fool a few. Before 10 PM we had a 175 LB swordfish in the boat, which was caught by Dave Morin of Brick.  By the end of the night we boated 3 big yellowfins to 80lbs and the one swordfish.  The guys had plenty of missed opportunities at quite a few other fish.  We will have to go back next time.  I am planning a few more open boat trips, which cost only $417/person based on 6 passengers.  Capt. John

8/29/07: Today we were out with Ted Kilkenson of Jackson, NJ.  we had a duel mission today to target a few species.  Ted wanted to catch as many different species as possible.  Mission accomplished!  We started off where we were yesterday for some nice size fluke to 5.3 Lbs.  A total of 6 keepers.  We also added some sea bass on the reef site.  Then we stopped just off the after I read a few nice marks in a hole out of Barnegat inlet.  At that spot we produced some nice jigging action of small blues and weakfish and even a few croakers on clam.  What a blast catching all of those fish!  Everything was returned to the water with the exception of some nice fluke for the table.  We are going offshore this weekend for another overnight tuna trip Sun-Mon.  we still have some good dates available for Sept and October.  Then we switch over to Wreck and Striper fishing.  Capt. John

8/28/07: We had the John Warender charter from Bergenfield, NJ out today for fluke.  We were in 70' of water in some rough bottom areas.  We caught 17 fluke of which 11 were keepers.  The largest fish was 6.3 Lbs.  Capt. John

8/18/07 - 8/19/07: We had the Jamie Borenious charter out today, except without Jamie.  Unfortunately a family emergency kept hime from coming, but he insisted we still go.  So we went to the Lindenkohl canyon sat into sunday.  We got caught 2 yellowfin to 80 lbs on the chunk anlong with 1 longfin.  When the sun rose, we trolled up 5 more long fin and 1 yellowfin.  One long fin caught by Matt Antorek weighed in at 70.3 lbs!  The fish was weighed by Lacey Marine in Forked river.  Squid was thick at night with our hydroglow light.  we were away from the fleet in the deep when we were chunking.

5.5 LB FLUKE!!!

8/15/07: I had Eric Gill from Morristown, NJ and his kids out today for fluke.  we had consistant action on fluke with very few junk fish.  We caught over 20 fluke with only  4 keepers and 1 sea bass to go home with.  The largest fluke was 5.5 lbs. which was caught by Jenna Gill.  The weather couldnt of been more perfect.

Saturday 8/11/07:  I was out with John Wallace of Marlton, NJ and his family.  We caught 23 fluke on the Harvey Cedars lump and a few more on the Garden State Reef North, but only 5 keepers.  The biggest however was 5.4 lbs.  Capt. John

Sunday 8/12/07: I was out with Don Murray of Parsippany NJ and his friends.  We went to the Barnegat Ridge and trolled a few bonito, before setting up for blues.  The action was not non stop, but fairly consistant.  We caught blues in the 6 -10 lb range for the rest of the day.  Weather was much more cooperative today.  Capt. John

We have our first offshore over night tuna trip scheduled for this coming weekend.  We still have a few good dates available.  With my 33' HydaSports Express with triple 250 HP motors, we can expect to make it to the canyons in about 2 hours.  Top speed is 61 MPH!

8/5/07:  I had Peter Burke and his friends out today for a bluefish charter.  Its was non stop from the minute the first bait went over.  The only time the action stopped is when everyone stopped to take a break for lunch.  As soon as they resumed fishing, the blues were still there waiting.  Blues started in the 6-8lb range, but in the afternoon it was all jumbos up to the biggest at 15 lbs!

8/4/07: Went fluke fishing today with my mate, Mark Purpura.  We caught 8 nice keeper fluke and about twice as many throw backs.  We were fishing in 45' of water out of barnegat inlet.

John

7/29/07: I had my son 8 year old Andrew Cafiero and his friend Jacob Post, 9 out today for some bottom action.  Jacob caught his first ever sea bass and some nice fluke.  Andrew had a blast with his dad catching a few fluke for himself.  On the way in we were surrounded by bunker.  we snagged a few and dropped them down looking for bass, but there were none around.  We were only out for a half a day, but caught some nice fish.  Capt. John

7/26/07: I had out Bill Davenport group out today.  We had our fill of bonito on the troll.  We caught 23 bonito and then set up for bluefish.  It wasnt long before they were coming over the rail as fast as we could get the bait down to them.  The action just didnt let up.  It wasnt long before we had the fish boxes full and then we were catching and releasing them.  Come and get them now!!! Capt. John

7/20/07: I was out for an afternoon 2 hour fishing trip with father and son team of Tom and James Bucci of Wayne, PA.  They only had 2 hours to fish, so the pressure was on me to get them into some and quick.  We got down to Meyers Hole and it was loaded with agressively feeding 1 lb. blues.  The fish hit everything we threw their way.  Tom and James were amazed at the agressive little fish.  We wound up staying a little while longer, as they just didnt want to leave all of those fish behind.  Capt. John

7/19/07: I was out for fluke today with Tom Chandler of Philidelphia, PA and his family.  We put together a nice catch of keeper fluke to 4.5 LBS.  We were on the artificial reef sites and added some nice seabass on the rough spots as well.  On the way in we found a large school of taylor blues that we had a lot of fun catching and releasing.  They loved the action and plan on coming back soon.

7/10/07: SEAFOOD SCORES WITH A 42 LB BASS!  I was out with Dave of Connecticut and his family.  The fog was thick but we were able to find this nice cow.  It must of been still hungry as it had 3 big bunker and a whole snail in its stomach!  We were 10 miles north of the inlet in 40' of water.  We marked a few fish and some bait and found this nice big one.    It was a long ride home in all the fog, but everyone was glad they were going home with some nice fresh Bass fillets.  Capt. John

7/3/07: I had a half day Striper trip today.  Conditions were tough in the wind, but we still found a nice fish.  I was out with Roberto Weinman of Princeton and Jack Rinkens.  We couldnt find any bunker on the surface with all of the chop, but we marked a lot of bait and fish up along Seaside in 38' of water.  Roberto landed one nice bass at 25 lbs.  It was his first striper ever.  I still have some good dates available for tuna.  Please book your trip early to ensure  your spot.  Capt. John

7/1/07: We went to the Resor Wreck looking for sharks with a great bunch of guys from the Barnegat Fishing Hole website. (www.BHWEB.com)  Nothing there but green water.  Then we picked up and went to the Glory Hole.  We had a little better water there and had more activity.  We had a small brown shark show up early and a nice size mako at the end of the day, but neither would cooperate.  Capt. John

6/28/07: I was out with Chris Chiappardi and his friends.  We went looking for bluefish and we found them on the Barnegat Ridge North.  Started off a little slow, but once they smelled the chum, they came running!  Fish were big from 10-14 lbs.    After a short time, they had enough fo dinner, so we started releasing the rest.  Everyone had a great day!

6/21/07: The Krause charter was out for a day of fluking.  We caught fluke and seabass on the Garden State Reef site and on just fluke on Harvey Cedars Lump.  The lump seemed to hold bigger fluke, as the biggest was 19 1/2".  We caught over 35 fluke with 8 nice keepers.  On the way in we saw a large school of small blues feeding on the surface.  We stop the boat for some catch and release action.

6/19/07: I was out today with Bill Reiner from Marlton and his friends.  We got into some big bass again and the blues were big and hungry.  We caught them on live bunker.  The bass were from 22 to 35 lbs. and the blues were 8-12 lb class.  Everyone had a blast.  Dont forget to book your tuna trips now.  We can get out there in under 2 hours, which leaves you with a lot more time to fish.
